NBC Will Add Brian Williams Prime Time Show To Lineup ‘As Soon As It’s Ready’

NBC News confirmed Sunday a prime time newsmagazine is in active development for Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, with plans to add the show to the network’s fall lineup “as soon as it’s ready.” The Hollywood Reporter quotes NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt saying the show will be designed to showcase the wide range of BriWi talents. “It’s about being relevant and engaging and also entertaining, which is what Brian uniquely does,” Greenblatt told reporters during a conference on Sunday. “It’s his sensibility, personality and skill that can inform this.”

The new program’s described as a multi-topic newsmagazine, but be ready for Williams to show off his “fun” side. “First and foremost [Williams] is a newsman,” said Greenblatt. “But at the same time he has a really fun personality that I think can enliven a newsmagazine show [in a way] he can’t do on the evening news.”

If Jay Leno failed in primetime, what chance do they really think Williams has with a News program? I say close to zero. Cable news is where the people go.

This should be even better than Ted Koppel’s Dance Party , ABC 1997 – 2004 .

All right! I’ll Tivo it along with The Cape.

As I commented to the previous post about the proposed show, I personally favor long-form journalism similar to the old “NBC White Paper” with some documentary/profile stuff in off-weeks as filler.

Hopefully, if they hold “60 Minutes” out as a model, they’ll produce better quality this time around and not just cheap, cheesy fluff. After all, “Dateline” may have started by blowing-up cars for story enhancement, but there were a couple years of over-produced, not half-bad reporting before the program fully evolved into a sad joke.

News magazines are cheap and it sounds as if this one will mostly uses existing resources, so though they’d like it to win, if it can create some buzz and get better than a zero, they come out ahead.

As for the Leno experiment, I’m not sure how it compared in the ratings against the cable news channels, but my gut tells me that he likely beat them most, if not every night. Of course, he wasn’t competitive against the other broadcast networks and he was probably beat sometimes by USA and TNT, but the reach of broadcast and the lower end of the dial is still an advantage.

Not to mention, the Williams show could also be rebroadcast on MS or CNBC.

Don’t let the facts get in the way there, Michelle-in-Utah. Cable “news” is where Rightist Reactionaries go to seek affirmation of the prejudices. News is not of much value there. Given the utter trouncing of the cable “news” stations by the broadcast news programs (23M news average v. FOX’s 2M, which equals to more than 10 times), and, in particular, the primacy of NBC News (9M v. 2M, or over 4 times), I think you are simply pushing around your old very smelly kart o’ krap. Again, don’t let the facts worry you.

At least 9M Americans, apparently, or more than twice the number of people who care if O’Beckerhead, Bill-o and O’Hannity have a show.

I always care deeply about the ratings of shows I don’t watch.

Are you really comparing cable news ratings to network news ratings? You’re a fool.

An 0bama/Democrat fluff-a-thon. Prime time Fluffer.

  • ChrisNH

‘As soon as it’s ready’ simply means ‘As soon as Obama needs it.’

Everyone knows this to be true. He cannot and will not win re-election without the full and billowing sails of his adoring, breast-feeding media accomplices. ‘BriWi’ (isn’t that CUTE???) is part of that obvious mosaic.

  • Probably NOT wrong

    Good Lord!
I thought I was seeing things with the “BriWi” nickname! WOW!
    That was cute though”
Show can be called “BRIWI IN PRITI”
    Ratings magnet!!
    I won’t charge NBC for that….
