New York’s “Ice Car” Owner Talks About His Winter: “It’s Going Okay”
From the Fantastic Files this morning comes the story of New York’s “Ice Car,” an Audi wagon encased in a tomb of ice after a water main break. On NBC’s TODAY this morning, Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira chatted with the oddly good-spirited owner of the “Ice Car,” Peter Helfer, who was basically still so excited about having found a parking place in New York, that the whole car-frozen-solid thing was just, you know, details.
Helfer told the TODAY hosts he found himself a good spot, parked, and–as New Yorkers do–didn’t worry about the car for days. In the meantime, factor in sub-zero temperatures and a broken water main, and the result was a German car transformed into a block of ice. When Helfer got to it, he tried to run the engine to warm the car, and succeeded only in changing the temperature enough to shatter the windshield.
Helfer had his hands full Monday morning and had to call his boss about a morning meeting–and in keeping with the delicious nature of this story–thge boss called him on the story. Frozen car? You’ve got to do better than that! And Helfer started sending pics and links. Get out of jail free card.
