Rachel Maddow Beats Keith Olbermann In His Triumphant Return From Suspension

In his triumphant return to MSNBC after a four-day indefinite suspension, Keith Olbermann had great ratings. But Rachel Maddow, the next hour, had even more.

More details…

Maddow had 439,000 in the A25-54 demographic, compared to 426,000 for Olbermann. In total viewers, Olbermann won, 1,499,000 to 1,321,000.

Meanwhile, the numbers didn’t come close to even half of Fox News’ ratings. Bill O’Reilly had 898,000 and 3,795,000 and Sean Hannity had 887,000 and 3,253,000.

HAHA, now that has to hurt. Stage a massive publicity stunt and can’t even beat madcow! Better luck next time, Bathtub boy!

    “Full ratings coming soon.”

Don’t bother, Bill O’Reilly will brag about them on his show soon.
There are two things he mentions every night, his ratings and his book sales.

    He’s a Whorewolf.

I just made that up. Whorewolf. I like it!

  • rocky road

Oh boy, this is great. I thought this was the biggest story since 911? Since the Kennedy assassination? And he only got a few more viewers (curiosity) than normal? And O”reilly still beat him my triple?

    HA HA HA

Whos is Rachel Maddow and what is MSNBC?

    LoL

  • Michéle – Ft Leavenworth KS

Looks like Maddow may become the queen of MSNBC nightly shows. Keith seems so angry, Rachel seems more calm, which I imagine is what has folks deciding to watch.

Watching an angry, over opinionated, anchor isn’t always what folks want to watch when they get home from work. Also, I think folks liked it when Bush was in office, it fit, but with Obama, Keith may need to rethink his formula for success.

  • Moderate

I would have thought Olbermann would have a record breaking night. I guess he has saturated his small niche audience.

  • tatboy

Wow… all that and he couldn’t even beat Maddow and is still a distant dot in Fox’s rearview mirror. Jebus this guy can’t buy better pub and he is still a loser.

  • Big_F-ing_Deal

What’s really hilarious is Jon Stewart’s “America” (No. 1) kicking the shit out of O’Reilly’s book week after week.

  • cmdrgmh

“In total viewers, Olbermann won, 1,499,000 to 1,321,000.”

Thats the count. In total viewers Countdown was still the highest rated show on MSNBC. We all know Oreilly has the highest viewership. But, when it’s the only Republican Network on TV, that makes sense why there are more people watching. Everyone else is didvided between the rest of the TV shows. Plus one big difference Fox News (Spit) is more available to viewers then MSNBC. MSNBC is not part of the standard Cable package in most area’s. Just Facts.

cmdrgmh, once comcast takes over everyone will have MSNBC. However, the people there now may not be there later. Comcast is in the business of making money and will actually care about ratings.

  • TfT

I guessed he would get about 1.5M viewers (patting myself on the back, but not quite as hard or as much as Olby did last night). I also guess he won’t hold on to that number of viewers.

All in all, these are good numbers for Olbermann, so I expect to see him congratulate himself tonight, or at least read about it since I don’t ever watch Olbermann.

FNC dominates and MSNBC isn’t going to be able to catch up. MSNBC speaks only to the liberal left, whereas FNC speaks to all parties, right, left, middle.

Ya know Rocky, you may be right, but I hope not. Because there should be different voices on air. I would say the same if Fox was bought out by a liberal buyer. I think we need the differing voices to equel out everything..

Actually, Bush was a ratings goldmine for the left. It just works out the party thats in power, loses tv ratings to the other party. When Bush was in, MSNBC did great, when Obama got in, the rating went down. Mostly because people get comfortable and rest their views when they’re party is in power and the other side gets wound up until they’re back.

Gordon, we were all having a nice discussion without your shit. Every Party in power always say’s things are great no matter what. Bush did the same thing in 06 right before the election. Even when he was asked about Rumsfeld. The day before the election he was asked if Rummy was going to be fired, He said no way. The day after the election, he fired Rummy. They never tell you the truth. Bush was even asked about the flat out lie about Rummy, and he said “So What”. That’s the game fatboy.

Finally. Olbermann is such a blow-hard and his persona makes it hard to take anything he says seriously. Maddow is super smart, a Rhodes scholar, and if you’ve watched her show, spends less time lecturing her audience and more time delving into the real issues of whatever she is discussing.

I never even thought Olbermann was a big deal at MSNBC, I thought Maddow was so much better that I figured she’d have the higher ratings by now.

I say GOOD, I used to like Olbermann but this is the kind of kick in the ass he deserves. His ego needs to be deflated a little.

one thing i always like on keith’s show is oddball…for the most part, i bipartisan collection of clips and i enjoy his wry sense of humor.

oh, and fridays with thurber…the one about the alcoholic bear is hilarious…it’s short so here

The Bear Who Let It Alone, by James Thurber

In the woods of the Far West there once lived a brown bear who could take it or leave it alone. He would go into a bar where they sold mead, a fermented drink made of honey, and he would have just two drinks. Then he would put some money on the bar and say, “See what the bears in the back room will have,” and he would go home.
But finally he took to drinking by himself most of the day. He would reel home at night, kick over the umbrella stand, knock down the bridge lamps, and ram his elbows through the windows. Then he would collapse on the floor and lie there until he went to sleep. His wife was greatly distressed, and his children were very frightened.
At length the bear saw the error of his ways and began to reform. In the end he became a famous teetotaller and a persistant temperence lecturer. He would tell everybody who came to his house about the awful effects of drink, and he would boast about how strong and well he had become since he gave up touching the stuff. To demonstrate this, he would stand on his head and on his hands, and he would turn cartwheels in the house, kicking over the umbrella stand, knocking down the bridge lamps, and ramming his elbows through the windows. Then he would lie down on the floor, tired by his healthful exercise, and go to sleep. His wife was greatly distressed, and his children were very frightened.

Moral: you might as well fall flat on your face as lean over too far backward.

You mean the same kind of truth like the cost of the President’s trip that fox told? Fox is watched by the dumbest people in ths country. Thankfully it’s actually less than 2% of the population. I’m not sure why you folks keep equating news orgs and ratings but, it’s typical of the ignorant and uninformed. While all news orgs would love to get higher ratings they can’t do that unless they stoop to fox’s level of lying and telling the rubes who watch what they want to hear. By the way, did fox retract that bullshit story about the President’s trip? Fox is more in line wiht Dancing With The Stars. It’s entertainment for the idiots who watch it but, it has nothing to do with actual news and is the joke of the industry. Exactly how many Peabody or Cronkite Awards have they won?

  • cmdrgmh

    Hey Krackauer,
Since ratings is your big deal, Has CNN ever had high ratings in any of their programs?? Serously, Have they ever in the past say 15 years to present day, had decent ratings?? Just curious. Because what you have been posting over the past year has been pretty bad. It makes you wonder how they keep going trying to play it straight.

I appreciate the shout out. As a chick with a military background, I pay close attention to what our country does abroad. I had concerns for how we arrived at going into Iraq, in particular my husband would go there. But we are soldiers, airmen, seamen and marines and when we are told to jump, we ask how high sir.

So, when question’s came out it should have been transparent. So I respect your ire, on this and on Bush.

My anger dealt no only with Iraq, it also dealt with spending, not honoring his republican roots. He further ticked me off for not talking to the country, giving us regular updates as to how events were going in Iraq and Afghanistan.

When we send our loved one’s into war, our president should be giving us the Americans who voted for him, the commander-in-chief regular updates, we not only deserve it we should demand it.

Frankly, Obama does a lot of TV, but also gives little to the American people of the successes or missed opportunities in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

I imagine when you are angry, it does make a viewer feel less isolated to watch an anchor express your point of view. Perhaps one day Olbermann can broaden his anger. He had an ability that reached out to angered Bush folks, but now Bush isn’t really part of the conversation, where does Olbermann turn and if he does he best do it quickly.

George Will beats the pants off of all of them, left and right. Yeah, Rachel is smart, but she is intellectually dishonest. She digs up some lame, wannabe Republican and hammers him like a trial lawyer over some remote incident in his past, then tries to paint the entire GOP as ‘hypocrites like this guy.’ And she actually keeps a straight face while saying ‘MSNBC is not a political organization like Fox.’ She would make a great trial lawyer. A lot them are intellectually dishonest if there is a buck in it. She’d fit right in.

    Hey, Steve,

The real story is that Olbermann’s return didn’t even beat O’Reilly’s 11pm rerun:

“Full ratings coming soon.” Don’t bother, Bill O’Reilly will brag about them on his show soon. There are two things he mentions every night, his ratings and his book sales. He’s a Whorewolf. I just made that up. Whorewolf. I like it!

Meh…………..not that funny. I guess in print it’s funnier because of the similarity to werewolf. Not too funny when you say it, though. It just doesn’t roll off the tongue like werewolf.

    Werewolf……….whorewolf……….werewolf……….whorewolf.

    Nope.

First thank you for your service to our country. It is unfortunate that we only say this on the day marked for appreciation. My beloved rarely in town, was able to take me to a doctors appointment in KC, a young man, said to my husband THANK YOU, it was the first time I had encountered such kindness and respect, it choked up my beloved, he does not serve for appreciation, but it did make a difference.

I agree many will give shout outs for our military, but why not do it on July 10th, March 27th, we forget their courageous service. I just want the leader of our country to stand before the country and tell us what the status is. I think back to the fireside chats decades ago, folks lived to know, radios on, what was going on. Certainly a different era but today family and friends want to know the status of the wars.

I respect your enjoyment of Olbermann, that you proudly stand up for his show.

Just Facts.

See, this is what I love about the Left.
The total crap they put forward that creates a logic loop.
Or makes them look like dogs chasing their own tails in circles.

Whenever MSNBC gets their ass kicked by Fox News in the ratings, the Left loves to trot out this tired argument that Fox is the “only Republican Network” on TV — and, yes, please note the word “only” (his choice, not mine) — while Liberals get split up in numbers watching all the OTHER news stations.

BUT…the second you THEN say back to them: “Okay, so if that’s true, then you’re actually ADMITTING that the REST of the media DOES tilt to the Left and it IS biased, since that’s where Liberals go to get their news”…

…Suddenly they dart their eyes back and forth. Or the gears in their heads start to spin and fry with arcs electricity darting about, like Robby the Robot in FORBIDDEN PLANET. Because now they’re caught in a logic loop of their own creation.

Typical Liberal rant: “Fox is the only Republican network. And because liberals have so many other shows we can watch, that fractures our numbers. And THAT is why our beloved Keith and Rachel can never beat O’Reilly and Hannity’s numbers. It’s just not fair!!!!”

(Same Lib suddenly handed their talking point memo from DNC headquarters): “Wait… hold on… what did I just say??? Forget all that! Did I say Fox was the ONLY Republican station? No, no, no — ALL stations are in the pockets of the Republicans! Yeah, THAT’S the talking point I was SUPPOSED to say! Because it’s important that we keep LYING about the OBVIOUS bias in news rooms! So that hopefully people won’t notice just how Left news rooms actually are! So forget what I said before! Scratch all that! Look away!!!! Like the WIZARD OF OZ, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain !!!!!!!!”

When did MSNBC turn into the Cenk Uygur Network?
I can’t seem to avoid him anymore. He is everywhere.

I laughed at your comment since I was recently thinking the exact same thing. I swear, it just seems like every time I turn on MSNBC, there is Uygur doing “something” to give him air time. Like you said, it’s like you can’t avoid him even if you try!

It seems to me they’re clearly trying to groom him as their newest, angriest, fire-spewing, bomb throwing host — and given his age, hoping he’ll appeal to young, angry viewers as well. In fact, I’m not sure when his contract runs out, but given that his rating are piss-poor and he’s at the bottom of the MSNBC pile, my guess is they’d love to replace Schultz with Uygur at some point, figuring he couldn’t possibly do worse than the numbers Schultz is pulling in.

Right. FoxPAC lies to everyone who tunes in, but the left is well aware of Fox’s deceptions (and don’t watch the FoxPAC Republican Propaganda Channel.

    The Yahu Fuk says:
“Have you collected your unemployment and food stamps this week GBR?”

This is what I was writing about:

    The Yahu Fuk says:
“Seems there’s a bit of inconsistency here. On the one hand you say you “abhor name calling,” yet you do it all the time.”

I don’t do it “all the time,” Yaho, and when you stop your baseless ad hominem attacks on me and stick to taking positions on the issues instead, then I’ll stop calling you the appropriate moniker, Yaho Fuk.

Got it? I’m calling you a Yaho Fuk because you have it coming, and I look forward to the day when you stop acting like a child. Again: stick to the issues. If you want to defend the huckster Beck, go for it. I’ll respect your best efforts. If you want to attack me with your ignorant claims about me, someone you know nothing about, then I’ll call you as I see you.

  • http://sharethisurlaboutglennbeck.com/ GlennBeckReview

    The Yahu Fuk says:
“Either you’re cheating your employer out of your salary by trolling websites e.g. MediaLite during business hours,”

Neither. I’m one of my boss’ favorite employees accomplishing all of my tasks with a minimum of OT, and I do it during the day. I have a great job, Yaho; eat your heart out!

I don’t “troll” MediaFight: I live here. It’s my online home away from my online home, The Glenn Beck Review.

Could your being one of your bosses favorite employees be because the job you have (trying to make a few nickels with your lame-assed website) is the one you gave yourself?

Keep calling people names, it will enhance your credibility.

Why don’t you admit that you’re a nobody, with no job, and your silly little lie-infested, pop-up infested, tracking cookie infested website is the only gig you have?

I have a great job, too, but I don’t waste my employer’s time by trolling MediaLite while on the clock.

    The Ignorant Yahu Fuk says:
“Could your being one of your bosses favorite employees be because the job you have (trying to make a few nickels with your lame-assed website) is the one you gave yourself?”

No, that’s just an ignorant, dishonest question.

    The Ignorant Yahu Fuk says:
“Keep calling people names, it will enhance your credibility.”

I don’t call people names unless they attack me personally. You and Gordon Blowhard are on a short list.

    The Ignorant Yahu Fuk says:
“Why don’t you admit that you’re a nobody, with no job, and your silly little lie-infested, pop-up infested, tracking cookie infested website is the only gig you have?”

Lie infested? Name one “lie.” Go to the Glenn Beck Review and point to one example of a “lie.” You can’t stand that I have exposed your hero, the yellow propagandist Glenn Beck, as a liar, a hypocrite and a charlatan. That’s why you attack me. You CANNOT debunk the claims made on The Glenn Beck Review as lies because Uygur, Wise, Fallihee, Giroux, Houserman, and I do not make false claims. If I have asserted something in error, as I did once about Media Matters, I will correct it as everyone in the credible media does (but not liars like Beck who have no credibility).

    The Ignorant Yahu Fuk cuntinued:
“I have a great job, too, but I don’t waste my employer’s time by trolling MediaLite while on the clock.”

Then you must work the evening shift. Frankly I don’t care what you do, but your ignorance is well worth shining a light on. For example, you don’t seem to know what a troll is.

“In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response[1] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[2] ”

So if you “think” that I’m “trolling” MediaFight, then you must believe that when I prove that Beck is a liar, a hypocrite and a charlatan, that I’m being inflammatory. It does provoke Beck’s sheeple, ignorant fuking yahoos, into an emotional response, but that is not my intention. And if you continue to emotionally attack me instead of using your mind to take issue with something I’ve argued, you demonstrate that my changing of your comment name to Yahu Fuk is perfectly rational.

So again, let me encourage you to address the issues. Stop attacking me, and I’ll stop referring to you as what you act like: a f#%king yahoo.

    Got it? (I doubt it.)
