RNC Chairman Reince Priebus Calls Trump Debate ‘A Problem’, GOP Candidates Should Be Concerned About It

In an interview Thursday with Fox and FriendsBrian Kilmeade, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus expressed strong skepticism about the Donald Trump moderated Newmax debate scheduled for December 27. “We appreciate what Mr. Trump has done, but if you’re still talking about potentially running as an independent candidate, I think that’s a problem,” Priebus quibbled. “I think that would be malpractice for me as an RNC chairman to not believe that that is an issue.”

“I think having a successful businessman serve as a moderator has a lot of value but the issue here is whether the moderator should still be a person who’s still batting around the idea of running as an Independent,” Priebus added. “I think that should give some of these candidates some concern.”

Priebus joins a growing chorus of commentators that have thrown cold water on the idea of having Trump host a GOP debate including Ed Rollins who cast doubt on the idea it would even happen.

I only wish Tollbooth would accept, although I do realize that he is normally “huntin” at “the Rock” at this time of year.

Of course it’s a problem! You do not want to make a complete parody of the political system. Things might slip out of control and then you won’t have any credibility or authority to handle the situation…

Just think of it as the Al Smith white-tie dinner that McCain and Obama attended in 2008 and got to crack jokes about themselves and each other making it their most human-like appearance

Trump is a TV whore and would not mind his debate being billed an entertainment event

Since so much ado has been made about the black vote, by Republicans, rejecting this debate on the grounds that Trump was a Brither would be a step in the right direction to bringing over that 30% Cain boasted of. Then again, it could also be a step toward alienating the Republicans represented by the majority who, when polled, doubted President Obama’s citizenship.

“Things might slip out of control and then you won’t have any credibility or authority to handle the situation”
But but but but – that could NEVER happen with the modern GOP! Just look at how well they’ve done since the Tea Party straightened them out – in Nevada, in Delaware, in Alaska, in upstate New York. The Tea Party is SURE to save them!

“You do not want to make a complete parody of the political system.”

Jon Stewart has built a career on this.

    WHO?

At least Steele made the media rounds and promoted a GOP message; we never see ole’ Reince!

Local television in Austin is reporting that Tollbooth has declined the Donald’s invitation.

Priebus’ point is excellent. “The Donald” still has not ruled out the possibility of his running as an independent, which would clearly doom the Republicans’ chances in 2012. Under the circumstances he shouldn’t be moderating any Republican debates.

RRE, forgive my ignorance but what is the significance of “Tollbooth” as a nickname for Rick Perry?

Just found the perfect cartoon which drives the point home:

The only two to have agreed to participate in the debate are Gingrich and Santorum. I can see why Newt is going to do it. Both he and Trump are as arrogant as they come and both have a god complex. I guess Santorum needs more exposure. But, it would be hilarious to see only Newt and Rick on the debate stage. It would make the Trumpster look like an idiot.

hahahaha…yesterday Rancid was on MSNBC defending Trump and his debate…guess he had a change of heart….you wingnuts cant get away with shit….the mainstream republicans have declared war on stupidity and are winning…now you uneducated crossburning hobbits need to get in the back seat where ya dumb asses belong and let the adults take over…hey heres an idea for you idiots…START YOUR OWN FREAKING PARTY IN YOUR FREAKING COUNTRY !!!!….you AINT taking shit back here

Let me be the first to call the GOP RINOs.

The Republican elite are behind this.  Don’t believe him.

Clearly you don’t understand the point you’re quoting nor making yourself

Yeah, this is a total reversal from Reince. He’s acting like he has new information now when he knew everything earlier.

Priebus’ comments are too little, too late and too insincere. He should have put the kibosh on this fiasco the second it was announced instead of waffling around between the money, the fame, the conservative press (which loved it) and the “base.” And using the feeble excuse of Trump’s threatened independent run as reason to softly condemn this idiocy is a serious dodge. If Trump launches an independent run, it will have the same gravitas as Pat Paulsen’s runs.

I thought he was hired to fix the mess Steele left, not just watch it get worse.

I don’t think they should do it if only Gingrich and Santorum are willing to debate. It’s not really a debate anymore at that point. And Santorum is irrelevant. No one cares what he thinks.

Why did this yo-yo’s parents name him after a Toyota?

The GOP convention ought to be a riot this year in several respects.

I think he had the name first.

Mais non, mais non, mais non, Monsieur Reince!!!

By all means let the evil spirits you have summoned remain among you. This kind of circus is what you get when you have Fox as your propaganda outlet. When people get so used to propaganda like that as their source of news, they start to actually believe that people they see on Fox really are legitimate politicians instead of entertaining circus clowns the likes of which Stewart and Colbert can only remotely aspire to. When the name of the Republican “front-runner” switches in rapid-fire fashion from Michelle Bachmann to Mitt Romney to Rick Perry to Herman Cain to Newt Gingrich, any rational soul KNOWS that nothing serious is going on.

With that in mind, the Chairman of the RNC has NO business whining about the monster his party has created. If you didn’t want a monster in the first place, Dr. Frankenstein, then you shouldn’t have been spending so much time in your lab creating it.

I can just hear trump saying how Reince Priebus needs his support.

Rick Perry’s 2002 plan was to have the toll roads -the Trans Texas Corridor  would have used government’s eminent domain authority to seize rural farmland for a massive toll road project, complete with rail and utility lines.
Texans didn’t like the idea -

Since Gingrich has been on both sides of every issue, why doesn’t he just debate himself?

  • Anonymous

Reince Priebus DID NOT object tothis debate, in fact he went all over tv defending it back when the only dropouts were paul and huntsmans.

he’ s one of the worst type of SPINELESS SHILLS…makes michael steele look like an intellectual.

he goes on tv and spews idiot lies and talking points against the dems….

SLOPPY REPRTING TO IMPLY HE PLAYED A PART IN PUTTING A STOP TO THIS DEBATE…

HE WAS ALL OVER TV PROMOTING IT AS A GOOD THING.
