Watch Rep. Giffords Walk On Her Own While Boarding Plane Headed To Shuttle Launch

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, slowly and on her feet, boarded a plane in Houston this morning, bound for Cape Canaveral, Fla., where she will view the final launch of the space shuttle Endeavour, commanded by her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly.

As Houston station KHOU reports, Giffords arrived with a group of people–including a nurse from TIRR Memorial Hermann, where Giffords has been receiving treatment to recover from a gunshot to the head–in a dark-colored SUV around 9 a.m.:

The vehicle drove right up to a waiting NASA plane, and Giffords–guided by a second person–walked up the stairs into the aircraft.

Giffords has been in an intensive rehabilitation program at TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston for months, recovering from a gunshot wound to the head. She was shot at a political event in Tucson on January 8. Six people were killed.

This is more amazing than Obama’s Birther speech today. Gabby Giffords walking up the stairs onto the plane BY HERSELF. I caught it live from the local NBC affiliate (KPRC 2). That means ABC (KTRK), CBS (KHOU) and NBC were at Ellington field. Two amazing things and it’s only 10 am…

And a side note to the New York Senator who dissed Houston about the Space Shuttle;
They come to Houston when they are hurting ’cause they know they’ll be going home to see their loved ones – even if that home is New York City… : P

In today’s crazy, bitter world, it’s so nice to see something to remind us all that after all is said and done, we’re all just human beings, after all. No one can watch this without bursting with happiness for her and her family.

Also, let’s always remember the other people who didn’t make it.

I was a bit afraid of what we might witness. Seeing Rep. Giffords walk up those steps under her own power makes this not only a great day and accomplishment for her, but for America and our ‘ Exceptionalism ‘, highlighted by life saving treatment and care she has recieved from the best medical care ( a lot of money can buy ) in the world and the selfless human nature of her staff members that risked their own lives to surely save hers on that fatefull day in American history. Godspeed Gabby Giffords.

And thanks again to the DOCTORS for saving Gifford’s life. We wouldn’t be anywhere without the DOCTORS and the SCIENCE they use. Can you imagine where we’d be if we were all as stupid as to believe that talking to the ceiling helps anyone? Thank God we’re not.
