Wyclef Jean Officially Announces Campaign For President Of Haiti On CNN
It’s official, and straight from the horse’s mouth this time: musician Wyclef Jean is running for president of Haiti. Jean joined Wolf Blitzer on Larry King Live tonight to explain his decision and what he offers to the people of Haiti.
Asked initially by Blitzer whether he was, indeed, running, Jean responded with an attempt to get Blitzer to speak creole. Blitzer, confused, asked him to postpone the language lessons until the finished talking politics. Jean finally said yes: “this is my first time announcing it live,” he is running. He tells Blitzer that he is running not entirely out of his own volition, but because he is “being drafted by the youth of Haiti” into the job, the youth that have seen the status quo of their political system for so long be “corruption and ineptitude,” as Dr. Sanjay Gupta put it in the following segment.
Blitzer also asked him a question that almost everyone who heard the news asked themselves almost instantly: what qualifies Wyclef Jean to be the leader of a nation? “When I look at the past 200 years, with what our people have suffered, Wolf,” he answered, “coups after coup d’etats… me running brings a neutral situation, meaning that Wyclef Jean can sit with any politician.”
The elections are scheduled for this November, after having been postponed due to the devastating earthquake earlier this year. His official announcement on CNN below:
