GOP Chair Can’t Help Laughing When Dem McGovern Roasts Him Right on House Floor
Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR) couldn’t suppress a laugh when Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) roasted him on the House floor during a session devoted to President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill.”
The House and the Senate have been involved in a frantic two-step to get the bill to Trump’s desk by July 4, despite heavy public opposition to things like Medicaid cuts and opposition from within the party. Democrats have done everything they can to delay movement on the bill in hopes they can shift the narrow margin their way, while Republicans have had their own troubles moving things along.
Barring some major development, the bill appears headed for passage by a slim margin.
There was a bit of levity amid the high drama on Wednesday when Womack presided over a marathon House session and was called out by McGovern over a dubious voice vote judgment.
Womack couldn’t help but laugh when McGovern zinged him:
REP. STEVE WOMACK: The question is on ordering the previous question on the amendment on the resolution. Those in favor say “aye.”.
THE HOUSE: (SMATTERED AYES)
REP. STEVE WOMACK: Those opposed “no.”.
THE HOUSE: (LOUDLY) NO!
REP. STEVE WOMACK: In the opinion of the chair the ayes have it.
REP. JIM MCGOVERN: No. Mister Speaker–.
REP. STEVE WOMACK: Gentlemen from Massachusetts
REP. JIM MCGOVERN: I ask for the yeas and nays and a hearing aid for you.
REP. STEVE WOMACK: The yeas– (LAUGHS) The yeas and nays are requested.
Those favoring a vote by the yeas and nays will rise. Efficient number having risen, the yeas and nays are ordered.
After a little over an hour, Republicans managed enough votes to carry the question by two votes:
REP. STEVE WOMACK: On this vote, the Yeas are 214, the Nays are 212, the previous question is ordered.
