Americans will soon see “unexpected and critical” cyberattacks on their energy, water, and telecommunications infrastructure, an Iranian hacking group declared.
The Sunday statement on Telegram from the group APT Iran promised more cyberattacks on the United States, according to an exclusive report from NBC News, days after the U.S. renewed strikes on the regime.
The chilling report comes weeks after cyberattacks targeted water systems in seven states.
“Soon, the United States will witness unexpected and critical events in the energy, water, and telecommunications industries,” APT IRAN, said on Telegram, according to NBC.
So far none of the cyberattacks — which targeted automated systems connected to the internet — have succeeded, sources told the outlet.
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency, or CISA, issued a warning days before the July attacks on American water systems that Iranian hackers were setting their sights on such targets and trying to infiltrate the internet-linked devices utilities use to manage their systems, according to NBC.
The hackers took aim at more than 100 water and wastewater facilities, according to CISA, which issued an advisory on Aug. 21 urging infrastructure organizations to boost their defenses.
CISA did not respond to NBC News’ request for comment, while the White House referred questions to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which did not respond. The Central Intelligence Agency also declined comment, according to NBC.
Hostilities between Iran and the United States renewed this week, days after the conflict hit the six-month mark.
The most recent strikes saw the U.S. hit Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran and came after the IRGC recently tried to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members, U.S. Central Command said in announcing the strikes on social media.
The war began on Feb. 28, with joint airstrikes on Iran from the United States and Israel.
