Don’t bet on Marc Maron and Bill Maher having a friendly smoke together anytime soon after the WTF podcast host said the HBO star’s beliefs — the kind of commentary which Maron has previously referred to as “anti-woke” — symbolized nothing more than Maher’s “desperate chasing of relevance.”

Maron shared his displeasure with Maher during an interview with Pod Save America co-host Jon Lovett on Sunday.

“I always had a problem with his tone,” Maron said, when asked for his thoughts on the Real Time host.

Maron said he had appeared on Maher’s old show, Politically Incorrect, several times and had been on his HBO program once or twice. But Maron said he “can’t” see himself doing it again — primarily because of Maher’s views on “wokeness.”

“I feel with Bill that there is this — and it happens with some of the other boomers, there’s this desperate chasing of relevance that changes someone’s mind in terms of how they approach what they do and also kind of makes the whole undertaking feel desperate,” Maron said.

A representative for Maher did not immediately respond to Mediaite‘s request for comment.

Maron added that, beyond his disagreements with Maher politically, the Real Time host’s brand of comedy is “just not for me.”

“I know his joke writers. He’

s got good joke writers who know how to write for his tone, and I’ve known a couple of those guys,” Maron said. “They were comics, and they’re good guys, but I can’t see past, you know, the desperation in what he’s willing to do to stay in the conversation.”

The comic’s comments come as he has been doing a fair amount of press lately following the release of his new Netflix special, dubbed “End Times Fun.”

Maron, during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe last month, mocked “anti-woke” comics who feel letdown by President Trump after supporting him during the 2024 election. He also unsubtly compared the Trump Administration to Nazi Germany at the same time.

“Well, you know. I say, you know, ‘In for a penny, in for a Reichsmark,’ you know?” Maron joked. “Sure, you can backpedal all you want, but a collaborator is a collaborator.”

Maron’s quip followed comedians like Joe Rogan and Andrew Schulz criticizing the president in recent months for his crackdown on illegal immigration and his approach to sharing information related to Jeffrey Epstein.

Maher, on his end, made headlines earlier this year when he visited the White House to have dinner with President Trump and Kid Rock. The veteran comedian has both complimented and skewered the president since then, including during his latest Real Time

episode on August 22. Maher gave Trump kudos for considering decriminalizing marijuana — an issue near and dear to his heart; at the same time, Maher applauded California Gov. Gavin Newsom for his recent attempts to “out-stupid” the president on social media, which he said has been “very funny.”
