Mehdi Hasan Spars With Christian Nationalist Doug Wilson Over Whether ‘Household Voting’ Is ‘Misogynist’

Zateo’s Mehdi Hasan pressed self-described white nationalist pastor Doug Wilson on whether his “household voting” scheme was, in fact, misogynist.

In a clip from his podcast Mehdi Unfiltered posted to X, Hasan said, “You believe in household voting, I believe,”  before asking Wilson to explain what that philosophy entails.

“Yeah, so we live in an individualistic society where each individual is like a solitary BB. And we throw all the BBs in a sack and it turns into something like a beanbag chair. What I envision is a molecular society where families and households and churches and towns form complex molecules. And within that molecule, there’s a decision-making discussion that goes on.”

“So, let’s say we’re going to have a church election for calling a pastor, let’s say. The Smith household and the Jones household get together, and we’re going to have an election coming up. And they say, what do you all think? And the teenage kids contribute, the wife contributes. They have a discussion about what they thought of this guy’s sermon and what they thought of —”

“Who makes the final decision, Doug?” Hasan interrupted.

“Well if, in most cases, overwhelmingly, there wouldn’t have to be a final decision because it would be a consensus,” Wilson said. “But let’s say there was a difference of opinion —”

“I mean, my wife and I disagree on a lot of things,” Hasan interjected, adding, “Under your system, who gets to decide who to vote for? You dodged my question,” Hasan said, which Wilson denied.

“Well, Okay, let me ask straight up. Under your system of household voting, the husband wants to vote Republican. The wife wants to vote Democrat. Who goes to vote in the ballot box and who decides who they vote for?” Hasan asked.

Wilson answered, “The head of the household.”

“Who is the head of the household, Doug?” a seemingly impatient Hasan asked.

“If the man is there, if the man is present in the household, he’s the head of the household,” Wilson finally answered.

“So the man decides who to vote for,” Hasan said, to which Wilson confirmed, “Yeah.”

“Okay, that took a bit of time, but we finally got there,” Hasan quipped. “So, would you agree with the characterization that you are a misogynist?”

When Wilson said no, Hasan asked, “How is that not misogyny? How is it not discrimination?”

“You want to repeal the 19th Amendment so that a woman wouldn’t be able to vote,” Hasan continued. “The head of the household, who is a man, would vote. How is that not discrimination unless you’ve tortured the meaning of all words?”

“The word discrimination used to be a good word. ‘He has discriminating taste,'” Wilson said as example, as Hasan disagreed.

“But right now, it’s not. Right now, it means you are treating someone with lesser rights.”
