Strong storms brought an unusual sight to New York’s skies on Thursday when a massive waterspout formed near Long Island’s South Shore — damaging a beach community and leaving onlookers stunned.
“It’s a tornado,” a man can be heard saying in the now-viral clip of the weather phenomenon, which prompted a local emergency alert and wreaked havoc on the Atlantic Beach Club in Nassau County.
“That’s really bad. We’re filming it come right at me,” another says in the footage, which was posted to Instagram.
“I hear it that is a tornado and, oh my God, it is spinning around,” another said.
“This is insane,” the other man replies.
“We might have to get downstairs, guys. Oh my God, it’s pulling everything,” the man can be heard saying.
“I can see debris flying,” another person said.
“Oh my God, it’s ripping the tree,” the other person says before another declares, “This is real.”
The waterspout then begins to sputter, the video shows.
No one was seriously hurt, according to Nassau County Executive and New York’s Republican candidate for governor, Bruce Blakeman.
“There is property damage at Silver Point Beach Club and Sun and Surf that is being assessed right now, and a search team has been mobilized to make sure no one is trapped within the cabanas,” Blakeman told the New York Post.
Roofs were ripped from the top of some of the club’s cabanas, leaving debris thrown around and people terrified.
Matthew Stark told The Post nearly a dozen of his relatives ran for cover at the Sun and Surf Beach Club when the storm swept through just before 7 p.m., and had a close encounter.
“As I was closing the door to the cabana, you heard and felt the whoosh of the gusts of wind, and it ripped the roof right off, blew all the debris, and stuff just started falling on us — the roof and the beams,” Stark, 28, told outlet.
“I’ve never felt or experienced anything like that, kind of surreal. One second, it’s like no big deal. The next second, everything was turned upside down, quite literally.”
