Bomani Jones Calls for Ban on Court Storming After Duke’s Star Player Gets Injured: ‘Full-On State of Lawlessness’
Bomani Jones has joined the crowd calling for a ban on court storming after Duke men’s basketball star Kyle Filipowski was injured by a fan.
After Duke’s upset loss at unranked Wake Forest, hundreds of fans immediately swarmed the court in celebration. While walking off the court, Filipowski was caught in the middle of the crowd and collided with a running fan, injuring his leg as a result.
The incident has sparked a debate on the future of the tradition. To some, court storming is outdated and inherently dangerous for the athletes — especially for the losing team simply trying to leave. ESPN’s Jay Bilas even suggested arresting fans who do it.
Arguments in favor of the act generally center around it being a crucial part of the college sports fabric. In short, when a team wins a big game, they want to celebrate with the home crowd on the court or on the field.
To Jones, it’s simply not worth the risk because it renders security powerless.
“And so, the court storm is like the encore on steroids,” Jones said on his podcast The Right Time. “No one has any leverage over the kids once they get out there. It is a full-on state of lawlessness; and you know it’s a state of lawlessness because if you looked at those clips of that game and you just saw security like, ‘Alright, y’all come down.'”
“Now, you’re not gonna tell me that security at these games thinks this is a good idea. In fact, this what we’re talking about here is an anathema to their whole existence, right? Like, this is what they exist to prevent and they’re like, ‘Alright, y’all got it. Y’all come on down.’ They know this is a horrific idea.”
