‘I’m About to Lose It!’ Stephen A. Smith Gets Into Shouting Match With ESPN Colleague He Accused of Flip-Flopping on First Take
Stephen A. Smith got into it with ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky on Tuesday after Smith accused him of flip-flopping on a take about Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold.
The previous night, the Vikings lost 27-9 to the Los Angeles Rams in the wildcard round of the NFL playoffs. Darnold’s night was particularly brutal as he was sacked nine times, threw an interception, and gave up a fumble that the Rams returned for a touchdown.
Just weeks ago, much of the media discussion around Darnold was about how big a contract he might earn in the offseason thanks to a very successful regular season with the Vikings. After the last two games, that conversation has mostly quieted.
Orlovsky, like a handful of other members of the media, was high on Darnold and believed his stint in Minnesota was the beginning of a career turnaround. The morning following the ugly loss, however, Orlovsky questioned the media’s expectations of the QB and suggested that some thought too highly of him.
Smith was beside himself.
“Oh my god, I’m about to faint,” a stunned Smith said on First Take.
When Orlovsky claimed he always thought Darnold was a “good, talented player,” but that he wasn’t capable of being in the same tier as QBs like Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills.
“Shannon [Sharpe], y get him!” Smith said. “Shannon, get him! Shannon, get him! Get him! Oh my god! You haven’t been on national television over the last few weeks, going off about Sam Darnold and how great he looked? Are you kidding? I’m about to lose it! Shannon, get him! Get him, Shannon! Get him!”
In response, Orlvosky accused Smith of “making stuff up.”
