WATCH: Detroit Pistons Fans Send a Message to Owner as Team Sets NBA Record With 27th Straight Loss
Detroit Pistons fans on Tuesday let ownership know they’ve had enough as the team broke the NBA record for most consecutive losses in a season.
Despite a valiant effort, the Pistons lost 118-112 to the Brooklyn Nets. It was the team’s 27th straight loss, surpassing the 2013 Philadelphia 76ers and 2010 Cleveland Cavaliers for longest single-season losing streak in NBA history.
What makes the season especially brutal is the fact that the team isn’t even trying to tank — the act intentionally fielding a subpar team to increase the odds of securing the top pick in the NBA Draft. With the ascension of third-year guard Cade Cunningham, and the addition of coach Monty Williams, the Pistons were expected to improve from last season’s 17-65 record. Instead, they’re moving backwards.
On Tuesday night, thanks to a 41-point performance from Cunningham, there was hope the streak would finally come to an end. Then, a series of mistakes led to a complete collapse at the end of the game.
In a surprisingly packed Little Caesars Arena, fans began chanting, “Sell the team.” The scene was reminiscent of Oakland Athletics fans organizing “reverse boycotts” and filling the stadium to urge their owner to also sell the team.
The Pistons are just one loss away from tying the record for longest streak across multiple seasons. With just two games left in December, the Pistons are also on the verge of going two full months without a win.
