CNN’s Jake Tapper kicked off 2021 by searing Republicans over their attempts to stop Congress from certifying the Electoral College’s determination that Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election.

In his intro for State of the Union’s first show of the year, Tapper noted that the coronavirus continues to ravage the country, yet he accused Republicans of being more focused on creating a political spectacle by disputing President Donald Trump’s defeat. Tapper pointed out that there has been “no evidence” that the election results were changed by mass fraud, even as Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO), Ted Cruz (R-TX) and 10 of their colleagues are engaging in efforts against the vote certification.

“With around 3,000 Americans dying every day, what are the president and a big chunk of Congressional Republicans focused on? Undermining the results of the election, essentially a bloodless coup, leading the Republican Party to a state of turmoil.”

After highlighting the GOP’s infighting over the attempted certification blockade, Tapper told viewers “We invited each of the 12 senators involved in plotting this disgraceful effort to come on the show this morning to try to defend and explain their position. Each of them declined or failed to respond.” This prompted Tapper to invoke the words of Ulysses S. Grant: “There are but two parties now: traitors and patriots.”

“How would you describe the parties today?”
