Morning Joe contributor Pablo Torre warned that President Donald Trump’s “Doctor Strangelove-esque cabinet” would aim to “profit” during any economic “chaos” as he railed against the “vibe of corruption” and the “Crypto-Casino feeling” of the administration’s policies.
During Monday’s Morning Joe, host Joe Scarborough noted that on the campaign trail, Trump and key figures around him warned that citizens would “have a rough time” as policies rolled out, suggesting that “maybe” the country would suffer a recession, which the president brushed off in Sunday’s Meet The Press interview on NBC.
Scarborough noted that it would be a true test of American patience with the administration if shelves are empty during the holidays — after Trump suggested children could do with less toys and dolls.
“It’s about more than dolls,” co-host Mika Brzezinski added.
Torre agreed and delivered his take on the fears an economic downturn, invoking Stanley Kubrick’s satirical Cold War black comedy.
The doll thing feels instructive because this is the language of toys. All of this feels like a toy to Donald Trump and his cabinet, his Doctor Strangelove-esque cabinet of advisors.Market manipulation is what I think about when I hear them talk about ‘you don’t have to worry about this’ because they will know sooner than the rest of us what’s going to happen. And we’ve seen what happens when they
have a little bit of advance knowledge. There are moves to make. There are ways to profit off of the dip. There are ways to strategize ahead of the actual American people who did not vote for this.As much as the tariffs, absolutely correct, Donald Trump has been saying that so clearly. This thing, the dolls thing, the ‘hey, you might need to scale back.’ It’s just so obviously not what is.
Scarborough interrupted to repeat that Trump’s team said from the outset that people would “have to go through rough” times as policies rolled out, but Torre rejected the idea that that “rough” time was not for everyone.
“But they don’t! But the people who know what’s coming won’t have to in the same way,” he continued. “And that market manipulation, this whole like crypto-casino feeling economy is where there’s just an unmistakable vibe of corruption, self protection as chaos is going to loom. And that’s where Main Street certainly feels like an underrepresentation of how vast that damage and that anxiety is going to be.”
