California Mosque Set on Fire, Deemed Possible Hate Crime; FBI Investigating
A California mosque was set ablaze in what law enforcement officials have confirmed as arson, even suggesting it was a potential “hate crime.”
The fire started around noon on Friday, minutes before a scheduled afternoon prayer service. No one was injured, but the blaze caused some damage to the mosque.
According to NBC News, a person of interest has been detained in connection with the fire at the Islamic Center of the Coachella Valley, but has not been publicly ID’d.
A joint law enforcement statement read “This was an intentional act potentially resulting in a hate crime.”
Riverside County Supervisor John Benoit said that “it’s horribly lamentable that we would paint any group as undesirables based on the actions of an extremely small number of radical folks that don’t represent the religion in any way.”
