CNN Will Start Testing Drones for Newsgathering

CNN is now in possession of news drone technology. Well, sort of.

The cable news network has worked out a deal with the Federal Aviation Administration to test drones with cameras for newsgathering purposes. According to CNN’s report on the matter, CNN is partnering with the Georgia Tech Research Institute for their research and the FAA will take their research and use it to establish guidelines for how news organizations can use drones.

The FAA had placed a ban on commercial drone use, which some news organizations petitioned, decrying its “chilling effect on the First Amendment newsgathering rights of journalists.”

One CNN executive explained, “Our aim is to get beyond hobby-grade equipment and to establish what options are available and workable to produce high quality video journalism.”

Just don’t feel the need to throw Martin Savidge in a control room for days on end piloting it.
