Sources close to Trump have told Bloomberg that when Corey Lewandowski was still the Trump campaign manager, he tried to get the mogul to submit to an examination for self-opposition research. Paul Manafort and various Trump higher-ups were in favor of this examination as well, the goal being to find Trump’s political weak spots so his campaign would be ready to defend them if necessary.
Trump apparently declined to have any research done on himself, preferring to use his celebrity status and unconventional politicking to jumpstart his campaign. The Republican National Committee did their own self-opposition research into their field of 2016 candidates, though sources apparently stated that they failed to find anything especially problematic.
According to Bloomberg, the type of self-opposition research Trump refused to authorize would most likely have prepared him to deal with controversies like the uncovered audio of him talking about grabbing women “by the pussy.” Trump is still enduring the fallout from those comments, which have now been compounded by several accusations of inappropriate touching and behavior.
