Following Convictions, Rep. Chaka Fattah Resigns Effective Immediaitely

Chakka Fattah

Democratic Congressman Chaka Fattah will resign effective immediately, he announced on Thursday.

Fattah said he would be leaving now — not sticking around until his sentencing — “out of respect for the House caucus and so as not to cause a distraction,” reported Philadelphia Inquirer‘s Jonathan Tamari.

The 59-year-old congressman from Philadelphia was found guilty on Tuesday of several charges including racketeering, multiple counts of fraud, and money laundering. He had been indicted last July.

Fattah had already effectively lost his seat in Congress after he lost the Democratic primary in April. He is expected to be sentenced on Oct. 4 and remains free on bail.
