If you were shaken yesterday when the doomsday clock moved closer to midnight, just wait until you hear what Mikhail Gorbachev has to say!
Gorbachev — who was head of the Soviet Union when it was dissolved in 1991 — wrote a piece for Time yesterday. The URL actually just ends in “/gorbachev-putin-trump,” so that was ominous enough on its own. Gorbachev had even more arresting things to say in the body of the piece.
“‘[N]o problem is more urgent today than the militarization of politics and the new arms race. Stopping and reversing this ruinous race must be our top priority,” he wrote. “The current situation is too dangerous.”
He also asserted the following:
Politicians and military leaders sound increasingly belligerent and defense doctrines more dangerous. Commentators and TV personalities are joining the bellicose chorus. It all looks as if the world is preparing for war.
With the fiery “America first” rhetoric coming out of Donald Trump‘s White House and some of the combative and false information being propagated by the people we are putting on TV, maybe he has a point.
