Green Day is Taking on Donald Trump With Their Lyric Video for ‘Troubled Times’
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Green Day released the lyric video for its song “Troubled Times.” The video takes aim, not so subtly, at President-Elect Donald Trump. It also celebrates Civil Rights Movement leader Martin Luther King Jr. In a statement obtained by Rolling Stone, the band said “Today we celebrate love and compassion more than ever.”
The video features a very Trump-like figure wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat and spewing rhetoric that appears to be, at the very least, hostile. Also in the video are images of women’s suffrage and the Civil Rights Movement, as well as images of the KKK. At the very end, someone pushes a red button, and the screen is taken over by a mushroom cloud.
Green Day’s feelings on Trump aren’t news. Last year at the American Music Awards, they chanted “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA” during their performance, which they described as being “a good start to challenge him on all of his ignorant policies.”
