Irish Times and U.S. Embassy Clash over Which Country Invented St. Paddy’s Day

Americans have made a round mockery of St. Patrick’s Day, having melted it down with Mardi Gras, Halloween and New Year’s Eye into Quarterly Drinking Day.

But the U.S. Embassy in Dublin took it a bit too far when they released a (very well-intentioned) video tracing back “American” St. Patty’s Day trends like going to an Irish bar and ordering Bud Light wearing green, marching in parades, and eating corned beef and cabbage.

“You will be shocked when you see the 5 Ways Americans Invented St. Patrick’s Day!” the Embassy’s YouTube page announced.

The Irish Times wasn’t shocked, but it wasn’t too pleased, either:

“If the video is anything to go by, they also gave us parades, marching bands, and corned beef,” IT’s Dan Murphy wrote. “The claims will surprise few, considering how the Americans have also given us Halloween.”

Besides, we all know the real Irish holiday.
