James Clapper Refutes Trump’s Claim Others May Have Meddled in Election: ‘That’s News to Me’
During a news conference earlier today in Poland, President Donald Trump took some shots at the American intelligence community while expressing doubt that Russia was solely responsible for meddling in the US election.
In an interview on CNN this evening, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper was asked if his feelings about the president’s comments about American intelligence agencies while overseas.
“In a foreign country the day before he meets the president of Russia, did he just throw the US intelligence community under the bus?” CNN’s Jim Sciutto asked.
“It is hard not to reach that conclusion that — exactly so,” Clapper responded. He added that Trump’s remarks about press accounts of the number of intelligence agencies that initially agreed that Russia interfered are essentially meaningless because the first report indicated which agencies signed off.
Also, as far as the president’s claims that others could have been involved in the meddling besides Russia, the ex-DNI said, “That’s news to me.”
