Jerry Seinfeld Reveals ‘Heartbreaking’ News from Joan Rivers

Over the course of his “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” web series, Jerry Seinfeld has sat down with such comedy legends as Don Rickles, David Letterman, Louis C.K. and many more. Now, we’ve learned, the comedian was planning on making Joan Rivers the first guest of the show’s fifth season. But he never got the chance.

This week, Seinfeld posted a screengrab of a text message he had received last month confirming that Rivers was excited to do the show:

“I just came across this heartbreaking text on my phone from August 19th,” Seinfeld wrote. “I had asked Joan Rivers to be our lead guest on the new season of Comedians in Cars, and she was thrilled.” In fact, they actually had to postpone the filming of the episode so that Rivers could undergo the surgery that ultimately took her life.

“I would have loved to have shown another side of her,” Seinfeld explained. “I wanted to tell her how much I admire all she had accomplished, especially in the latter stages of her career. She was one of the greats. I’ll miss her.”

The new season of the series is scheduled to begin this fall. No guests have been announced, but during his talk with Seinfeld on Real Time this past week, Bill Maher made it very clear that he wanted to be considered.
