Jussie Smollett’s Role Removed From Final Two Episodes of Empire‘s Current Season

Fox has announced that they’re yanking Jussie Smollett from Empire‘s season finale in light of his legal troubles and the “disturbing” allegations against him.

A statement from the show’s producers confirms that Smollett’s character, Jamal Lyon, will be absent from the last two episodes of their fifth season.

“The events of the past few weeks have been incredibly emotional for all of us. Jussie has been an important member of our EMPIRE family for the past five years and we care about him deeply. While these allegations are very disturbing, we are placing our trust in the legal system as the process plays out. We are also aware of the effects of this process on the cast and crew members who work on our show and to avoid further disruption on set, we have decided to remove the role of ‘Jamal’ from the final two episodes of the season.”

Smollett visited the Empire cast and crew yesterday after being charged with orchestrating a hate crime against himself and falsifying a police report over it for personal gain. Reports on the visit suggest that Smollett apologized over the commotion he caused for the show, but he also asked for his colleagues’ support and insisted he’s innocent.
