Vice President Mike Pence was slammed for giving a shout-out to ex-Maricopa County, AZ sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was pardoned by President Donald Trump after being found convicted of criminal contempt of court for detaining mostly Hispanic immigrants “without reasonable suspicion.”
Aside from racial profiling and unlawful detentions, Arpaio’s other greatest hits include searching for Barack Obama’s birth certificate — since he still believes America’s first black president was not born in America — forcing his prisoners to wear pink panties, and failing to investigate hundreds of credible sex crimes.
However, his awful track record didn’t stop Pence from saying he is “honored to have” Arpaio attend his Phoenix event tonight, as the disgraced sheriff is supposedly “tireless champion of strong borders and the rule of law.”
Twitter responded to Pence’s hat tip by tearing into the vice president for defending the “nightmare” “racist” Arpaio:
This is embarrassing for Pence.
Arpaio is reviled in Arizona’s law enforcement community because he did *not* champion the rule of law. https://t.co/Tq4yI0jhE7

Arpaio directly flouted the rule of law on immigration https://t.co/50t4SBo0gw

Arpaio’s office blew through its budget on immigration efforts while violent crimes, including sex crimes, went uninvestigated. https://t.co/dVU4s7GXMT https://t.co/AZl3UhiuFq

Joe Arpaio is a racist and Mike Pence finds it an honor to recognize him. https://t.co/X5joVmgrl3

The Department of Justice concluded that Joe Arpaio oversaw the worst pattern of racial profiling in U.S. history. He’s been accused of police misconduct, abuse of power, failure to investigate sex crimes, and unlawful enforcement of immigration laws.
Nicely done @VP. https://t.co/p3rkfMpyVk

Arpaio was found in contempt of civil and criminal charges. He even got a presidential pardon to cover up his disgusting human right abuses…
Que “tireless champion of the rule of law” ni que nada https://t.co/RpsSI87ryB

Hi @VP, have you forgotten that Joe Arpaio not only is blatantly hostile to basic human decency, but he was found guilty of criminal contempt of court? That hardly makes someone a champion of rule of law. https://t.co/k1wQSNnFwp

If Arpaio wins his Senate primary, you can kiss goodbye to that seat if you are a Republican. What is Mike Pence doing?! https://t.co/Xs30WGjPMz

it’s not embarrassing to them, Arpaio reflects the values of this administration as much as anyone, they are proud of it https://t.co/xWCTsmnMvw
