MSNBC’s Heilemann Goes There: ‘Virtually Certain’ 10 Percent of GOP Would Say It’s OK For Trump to ‘Kill My Parents’

“I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and wouldn’t lose any voters.”

That, of course, is the famous 2016 quote from President Donald Trump defining the degree to which he believes his supporters are behind him. And Thursday on MSNBC, one analyst went even further — saying that, for some hardcore Trump backers, they wouldn’t even mind if that hypothetical Fifth Avenue shooting victim were one of their own parents.

Appearing on Morning Joe, John Heilemann shared his view that there is a not insignificant portion of the GOP base who would say they were fine with anything Donald Trump does.

“I would like a pollster to ask this question,” Heilemann said. “How many people in the Republican party think it would be okay for him to dissolve their own grandparents? I’m virtually certain that if it was a Donald Trump related question, you’d get like 10 percent that would [say], ‘Donald Trump has the power to do whatever he wants — including kill my parents.'”

The comment drew nervous glances and laughter from Heilemann’s fellow panelists. He clarified his point.

“There are some number of people who…they just hear the question as, ‘the media’s trying to test my loyalty to Donald Trump,'” Heilemann said. “And if it’s a question whether trump has the authority to do anything, they will say yes no matter what that thing is.”

Co-host Willie Geist acknowledged Heilemann’s point, but also said:

“Boy, this show got dark real fast.”
