Late night comedian Conan O’Brien‘s TBS show Conan had to do something it had never done before on Tuesday night — take a TV-MA rating. That’s because guest Ryan Reynolds was slated to premiere the red band trailer for his new comic book film Deadpool, which hits theaters in February 2016.
During the monologue, O’Brien opened up about the rating and what it meant to him and his show:
“This is absolutely true. As a result of Ryan Reynolds showing the Deadpool trailer tonight on our show, for the first time ever, I think in the whole history of the time that I’ve been on television, my show has been given a TV-MA rating.”
“We’ve never had this freedom before!” O’Brien later exclaimed to the audience’s delight. The news immediately devolved into erratic cursing, non-blurred middle fingers from announcer Andy Richter, and all sorts of other gags.
O’Brien and Reynolds also preempted the show’s hardcore festivities Monday night on Twitter:
Tomorrow #CONAN premieres the #Deadpool red band trailer. It’s so NSFW, our TBS rating will be TV-MA. OMG, so many acronyms.
