Following President Donald Trump’s one-on-one interview with NBC News’ Lester Holt in which he contradicted statements made by his administration surrounding his firing of FBI Director James Comey, it was reported that the White House was in a “dour” mood over his “off-the-cuff” remarks.
Appearing on CBS This Morning, veteran anchor Bob Schieffer took the president to task for essentially setting up his aides to fail in the aftermath of his decision to terminate Comey.
“Sending these people out to explain the inexplicable is not going to help,” Schieffer said, noting that firing Comey will not put the Russia issue to rest.
The ex-Face the Nation host continued, “He’s making fools of his own staff. The White House appears to be in chaos. It is the original amateur hour when you look at it from the outside.”
Prior to Trump’s interview, the White House insisted that Trump had fired Comey based on the recommendation of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. However, Trump explained himself that he had already made up his mind to get rid of Comey regardless of what the Department of Justice recommended, even suggesting that the FBI’s investigation into possible Trump-Russia collusion may have played a part in his decision-making.
