In the first of what will likely be many, many such instances, CNN’s man in Havana, Patrick Oppmann took on the mantle of battered weatherman, bravely facing the fury of Hurricane Irma as it swiped the island on its march to Florida.
CNN posted a video montage of Oppmann’s defiance in the face of nature, Saturday. At various points during the footage, Oppmann struggles to keep his coat off his face and can be seen dodging debris.
“There’s a spectacle to these types of movements of nature” Chris Cuomo observed during his marathon coverage of Miami Beach.
And he’s right.
We expect a similar video from him shortly.
Over the last 12 hours, Irma has weakened to a Category 3 storm, though it is expected to strengthen as it moves over the warm waters between Cuba and Florida.
Updated forecasting models are now suggesting the storm will miss a direct hit on Miami and rather move up the western coast of the state before moving on into Georgia and Tennessee.
