President Donald Trump and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will gave a joint statement to the media following their meeting today at the White House.
Indications suggest that Trump will use the meeting to discuss possibilities for achieving peace in the Middle East. Officials have said that the conversation will focus on negotiating borders with Israel, and a discussion about ending anti-Israeli rhetoric and violence in the region.
During an interview last week, Trump told Reuters “I want to see peace with Israel and the Palestinians. There is no reason there’s not peace between Israel and the Palestinians — none whatsoever.”
BBC notes that Palestinian officials were concerned about Trump’s pro-Israel stance in the past, but they were told that the president is prepared to negotiate on a two-state initiative that the Arab League considered in previous diplomatic talks.
The event is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. EST:
