It’s Fourth of July, so you know what that means: fireworks, flag-waving, and the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest. Joey “Jaws” Chestnut was at New York’s Coney Island today to defend his title as champion eater, and only did he win the Mustard Belt for the 11th time running, he also crushed his old record.
Chestnut managed to consume a record 74 dogs and buns in 10 minutes. A previous tally said that he only ate 64 hot dogs, but the final total was corrected after it was determined the judges miscounted at first by missing a plate he tore through.
“I found a vicious rhythm,” Chestnut said in a post-contest interview. “I was feeling good today.”
In the ladies’ competition, Miki Sudo claimed victory by downing 37 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Even though Sudo didn’t top her record of 41 hot dogs in one session, it was still enough for her to retain her title for the 5th year in a row.
