President Trump will hold a listening session today in order to discuss new ways to keep schools safe following last week’s shooting in Parkland, Florida. The session is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. EST.
Trump will host high school teachers, students, and the families of those affected by last week’s carnage. Those affected by the Columbine and Sandy Hook shootings will also attend, as will Vice President Mike Pence and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.
The conversation on school safety is one of several sessions the White House currently has planned to discuss measures to stop future mass casualty events. Today’s discussion will focus on mental health, gun control, background checks, and other measures like the president’s call to ban bump stocks.
Trump has said he would focus on the mental health aspect of school shootings, though the White House previously insisted that he’s open to other possibilities. Some of the students in Parkland have called this insufficient, however, saying more restrictive bans and legislative action are the best way to prevent anymore tragedies like this.
