Thousands of Ukrainians took to the streets of cities across the country over the weekend to protest the nation’s shift toward Russia and away from the European Union. Protesters in the capital city of Kiev, demanding the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovich, took control of the city’s Independence Square on Monday morning and erected a series of barricades.
The protests have been marked by violence. Over the weekend, a video emerged featuring police in riot gear beating apparently unarmed protesters and destroying their recording devices.
Yanukovich told reporters that he was “deeply outraged” over the reports of police violence.
