Hugh Hewitt Shuts Down Trump’s ‘Shocking’ Call for New Ukraine Leader: ‘Zelensky’s Not Going Anywhere’

Fox News’ Hugh Hewitt insisted President Donald Trump’s “shocking” call for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to be replaced was just him venting frustrations, assuring viewers Zelensky “isn’t going anywhere.”

Hewitt, a longtime conservative pundit and host of The Hugh Hewitt Show, was on Fox News on Saturday when his interview was interrupted by Trump speaking to reporters outside the White House. In his fiery comments, Trump called for a “new president” in Ukraine, accusing Zelensky of choosing not to make a deal to end the war with Russia. Trump was responding to Zelensky’s criticism of Russia supplying the U.S. with diesel fuel.

“Well, it’s shocking. A slow news day is not slow when the president stops by and talks to the press for five minutes and that was a pretty tough hit on President Zelensky,” Hewitt said after the president wrapped up his comments.

Hewitt praised Zelensky and argued Trump’s frustrations boil down to diesel refineries being hit by Ukraine.

“I’m a fan of president Zelensky, I think he’s doing what he needs to do to protect his country and I wouldn’t take anything off the target map, but the president also has a domestic economy to worry been and international economy to worry about and I think he’s trying to influence President Zelensky’s targeting decisions to avoid hitting the diesel refineries,” Hewitt said.

He insisted, however, that Trump’s talk of a “new president” is just talk and people shouldn’t expect Zelensky to be going anywhere anytime soon.

“Zelensky isn’t going anywhere. The American people shouldn’t expect him to go anywhere. He’s very popular in Ukraine. He would be elected again. The president is frustrated with him over targeting choices, but that’s up to the invading country. Russia is the bad guy. The president knows that,” he said.

Trump claimed that Zelensky could have ended the war “many times” in his comments to the press.

“He better damn well stop!” Trump said about refineries being targeted.

Zelensky earlier this week criticized the president’s diesel deal with Russia, saying it provides the country with significant economic relief while their country continues its invasion of Ukraine.
