A Wisconsin woman is facing felony charges for reckless endangerment after she allegedly strapped her young son to the roof of her minivan.
A witness informed authorities in the Milwaukee suburbs that Amber Schmunk had her 9-year old child ride on top of her car so she could move a plastic pool that wouldn’t fit inside the vehicle. The legal complaint against Schmunk claims that she was spotted after she pulled over, took her son off the roof, and folded the thing up.
“That woman needs to think the safety of her children,” local neighbor Barbara Sellin said to Fox 6. “As a grandparent right now, I mean, I know the kids have to be strapped in. That’s just common sense. You love your kids and take care of them. To put a kid on top of the car is beyond ridiculous.”
When cops spoke to Schmunk about the incident, she admitted her son rode on top of the car, “but only for a short time, maybe 20-30 seconds.” She told the cops that she had no way of strapping down the pool, and she thought her actions were alright since her father let her do similar things at that age.
Schmunk is due in court later this month, and if she is convicted, she could face fines and up to 10 years in prison.
