NYC Mayor Eric Adams SUES Bus Companies That Brought Migrants to City For Whopping $700M: ‘See You In Court’

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Thursday that he’s suing 17 charter bus companies that transported tens of thousands of migrants to his city on orders from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX).

Adams posted a video to X to explain this latest attempt to combat Abbott’s “reckless political ploys.”

“New York City has and will continue to do our part in the asylum seeker crisis,” Adams posted. “But we can’t bear the costs alone — and we won’t let those complicit in @GovAbbott’s scheme get away with violating our state laws. We’re seeking approximately $700 million from 17 charter bus companies that transported migrants to NYC without paying to care for them. We’ll see you in court.”

In the clip, Adams said Abbott’s busing program is “an attempt to overwhelm our social services system.” He continued:

These companies have violated state laws by not paying the costs of caring for the migrants. And that’s why we’re suing to recoup approximately $700 million already spent to care for migrants bused here in the last two years by the state of Texas. Governor Abbott’s continued use of migrants as political pawns is not only chaotic and inhumane, but makes clear he puts politics over people. Today’s lawsuit should serve as a warning to all of those who break the law in this way.

A press release cited the New York statute the mayor said the companies violated:

“New York Social Services Law § 149…requires that “[a]ny person who knowingly brings, or causes to be brought, a needy person from out of state into this state for the purpose of making him a public charge…shall be obligated to convey such person out of state or support him at his own expense.”

Abbott began busing migrants to Democratic “sanctuary cities” in April 2022, according to the Houston Chronicle, “to draw attention to the struggle Texas is having in managing the record flow of migration over the last two years across the Rio Grande.”

Adams has accused Abbott of playing “racial politics” by continuing to drop migrants off in “Black-run cities” like New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. The mayor’s press release said that 33,600 migrants have already been transported from Texas to New York.
