Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), the senior senator from Texas, sparred Tuesday with his state’s attorney general who slammed him for voting for additional foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.
“This is a question all Texans should be asking. Unbelievable that @JohnCornyn would stay up all night to defend other countries borders, but not America,” wrote Texas AG Ken Paxton (R) on X in response to another tweet that read:
While Texans slept, @JohnCornyn sent $95 billion to help other countries with their border problems.
Question: when was the last time Cornyn stayed up all night fighting for our border?
The Senate overwhelmingly passed a supplemental spending bill to allocate $95 billion foreign aid to the key U.S. allies that many see as a bulwark in holding back Russian and Chinese aggression globally. The bill passed 70 to 29 with 22 Republicans voting in favor.
Cornyn joined the GOP Republicans’ Senate leadership to vote in favor of the bill, which his other state’s senator, Ted Cruz (R-TX), has vehemently opposed – despite opposing a Russian victory in Ukraine.
Cornyn, a former member of Texas’s Supreme Court, hit back at Paxton – who has long been embattled in a corruption scandal over allegations he sold access to the powers of his office.
“Ken, your criminal defense lawyers are calling to suggest you spend less time pushing Russian propaganda and more time defending longstanding felony charges against you in Houston, as well as ongoing federal grand jury proceedings in San Antonio that will probably result in further criminal charges,” replied Cornyn on X.
Notably, Cornyn is both known as a staunchly conservative member of the U.S. Senate and for having a more mild political temperament than many of his colleagues – including Cruz. Cornyn released a statement on Tuesday defending his vote, saying, “While this bill leaves much to be desired and the process that led us here was deeply flawed, our national security is on the line. Given the damage the Biden administration has done to our standing on the world stage, this bill represents a renewal of essential American leadership.”
