Donald Trump Softens Attack on ‘War Hawk’ Liz Cheney, Doesn’t Repeat ‘Nine Barrels Shooting at Her’ Jab
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump softened his attack on Liz Cheney somewhat on Friday while explaining his controversial comments about having “nine barrels shooting at her” from the night before.
Trump set off a firestorm at a Thursday night event with Tucker Carlson, where he said, “[Cheney] wanted to stay in Syria. I took them out. She wanted to stay in Iraq. I took them out.”
“She’s a radical war hawk,” he said before continuing:
Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, ok? Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face. You know, they’re all war hawks when they’re sitting in Washington in a nice building saying, ‘Oh, gee, let’s send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy.’
But she’s a stupid person, and I used to have, I’d have meetings with a lot of people, and she always wanted to go to war with people. So whether it’s her, whether it’s– I was surprised a little bit with Dick Cheney. I didn’t know him at all. I only had essentially the one or two phone calls, and it was only a call saying, ‘Thank you very much for doing that for Scooter Libby, that was nice.’
While some argued that Trump was calling for Cheney to be executed, others submitted that he was calling Cheney a chickenhawk who was insulated from the consequences of her foreign policy views.
On Friday, Trump said that the latter was the correct interpretation.
“All I’m saying about Liz Cheney is that she is a War Hawk, and a dumb one at that, but she wouldn’t have ‘the guts’ to fight herself,” wrote Trump on Truth Social. “It’s easy for her to talk, sitting far from where the death scenes take place, but put a gun in her hand, and let her go fight, and she’ll say, ‘No thanks!’ Her father decimated the Middle East, and other places, and got rich by doing so. He’s caused plenty of DEATH, and probably never even gave it a thought. That’s not what we want running our Country!
