CNN Announces Candidate Lineup for Debate; Rand Paul Makes Main Stage
CNN’s Jake Tapper announced this afternoon which Republican candidates would make the main stage at Tuesday night’s Las Vegas debate.
Here are the candidates appearing on the main stage: Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, John Kasich, Chris Christie, Carly Fiorina, and Rand Paul.
And here are the candidates in the undercard debate: George Pataki, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, and Lindsey Graham.
It’s worth noting here that initially, CNN had planned to announce the debate lineup during State of the Union at 9 am. Instead, for reasons not entirely clear, the announcement was delayed until the second half of the 12 pm rerun.
Based on some polls, it was doubtful that Rand Paul would make the main stage. The Paul campaign has been complaining the past few days about the Kentucky senator being kept off the main stage. Paul said that if CNN could bend the rules last time to let Fiorina on the main stage, then they should extend him the same courtesy.
Paul’s campaign even released a statement last night calling on CNN to let Paul on the main stage while making it clear they’re not talking about getting “special treatment.”
There was even a report suggesting that Paul may drop out if he’s not on the main stage. That report has since been disputed.
