CNN Speaks To Frustrated Flyers Stuck In Newark Airport Travel Delay Chaos: ‘I Can See It On Your Face, The Pain’
Flyers facing delays and cancellations amid the chaos at Newark Liberty International Airport vented their frustrations to CNN as airlines are being hit with traffic controller staffing shortages.
CNN on Tuesday aired audio of an air traffic controller informing a pilot that the radar at the Newark airport went out and they had no idea how to track the plane. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said some traffic controllers are taking time off due to the recent outages.
CNN correspondent Brynn Gingras reported from the Newark airport that there had been 204 delays and 124 cancellations by Tuesday afternoon. The day prior, there were 425 delays and 160 cancellations. There is currently a ground delay in effect at the airport until midnight, affecting both domestic and international flights.
“No one is happy about it, especially people trying to get on flights in and out of Newark right now,” Gingras reported.
“I never liked this airport to begin with. Sometimes you’re stuck where you have to fly in and out of. And we’re leaving here on Friday for Italy so hopefully things will get better by then. We’ll see,” airline passenger Rich Scelfo told Gingras.
Delilah Darden, who has faced two delays thus far, could hardly find the words to describe her frustration.
“We have just been here at a hotel in Jersey, so it’s just been…not knowing what’s happening,” she said, shaking her head.
“I can see it on your face, the pain,” Gingras said.
“Yeah, yeah, it’s…” she began before Gingras stepped in again.
“It’s annoying,” the reporter said.
“Yeah, very,” Darden said.
