CNN’s John Avlon on Ivanka’s Olympics Trip: ‘Freelancing’ Diplomacy ‘In a Fur Coat Isn’t Going to Cut It’
Daily Beast editor-in-chief John Avlon reacted to the latest CNN reporting that Ivanka Trump’s trip to the Olympics is causing tensions at the White House, and he remarked on the fraught diplomatic environment at the Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.
CNN reported on Tuesday that Ivanka’s visit to South Korea is causing tension within the administration, given her unconventional status as the both senior adviser and daughter to President Donald Trump. It’s a status that reportedly prompted chief of staff John Kelly to tell confidants Ivanka is just “playing government.”
Avlon noted on New Day that “this is the United States of America and we tend not to have sons-in-laws and daughters running governments historically, which is why we have nepotism laws and should probably have them again.”
“But this isn’t simply the bunting around Olympics,” Avlon continued. “This is also an Olympics that is adjoining a country that we may well go to war with, if they continue to have nuclear weapons.”
“This is serious stuff, and simply freelancing in a fur coat ain’t gonna cut it,” Avlon concluded.
“That’s been said about me before, and I didn’t like it,” New Day’s Chris Cuomo replied.
