CNN’s New Day Says Trump’s D’Souza Pardon is Signal to Russia Probe Targets: ‘Get Out of Jail Free Card’
CNN’s New Day discussed Donald Trump’s decision to pardon conservative pundit Dinesh D’Souza yesterday by tying it to the Russia investigation, as his choice of pardons are “a big neon sign” to his allies currently caught in Robert Mueller’s probe.
“They’re a big neon sign,” CNN’s John Berman said. “One of the president’s big political advisers Roger Stone says, yes, it’s a signal and we’re getting it.”
Stone, a longtime Trump confidant, told the Washington Post that the president’s pardon of D’Souza “has to be a signal to Mike Flynn and Paul Manafort and even Robert S. Mueller III: Indict people for crimes that don’t pertain to Russian collusion and this is what could happen.”
“The special counsel has awesome powers, as you know, but the president has even more awesome powers,” he added.
CNN analayst John Avlon said Trump’s choice of pardons are “not subtle” and set “a dangerous precedent.”
“This is about part of being president is a get it of jail free card for your friends,” he argued.
The panel went on to agree that for people like Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen — who are facing tremendous pressure from the Mueller investigation to cooperate in their probe — this pardon means they should not work with prosecutors, as their pardon will eventually come too.
