John Oliver: Trump’s ‘Using His Own Incompetence As a Defense’ on Russia Investigation
On Sunday night, John Oliver tackled the recent indictments made by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in the ongoing Russia investigation, which he often refers to as “Stupid Watergate.”
The Last Week Tonight host began by addressing the charges one-by-one starting with Paul Manafort, who he mocked for his luxury spending on rugs and clothes as well as his three passports and recently traveled under an alias.
“Who outside of Jason Bourne needs three separate passports and an alias?!?” Oliver exclaimed.
He then noted Manafort’s heavy involvement in Donald Trump‘s presidential campaign including organizing the convention and his business partner Rick Gates frequently visited the White House.
“The question here is: Did Trump know all of this and not care or did he know none of it because he’s incompetent?” Oliver asked. “In other words, is Trump smart enough to be evil?”
He then invoked the guilty plea from George Papadopoulous and mocked Trump for not remembering the meeting that was photographed by the Trump campaign even though the president often brags about his “great memory.”
“Right now, there are three people from the Trump campaign facing serious charges about their entanglements overseas and in all three cases, Trump’s pushback has basically been, ‘I don’t know anything about the people I should have known those things about,” Oliver continued. “And that is his signature move. He’s playing the ‘Trump card’…. he’s using his own incompetence as a defense.”
