A bipartisan group of senators today are on the Senate floor to pay tribute to Vice President Joe Biden, including Republican Mitch McConnell, who celebrated his longtime Senate colleague’s life in a speech that was both moving and lighthearted.
McConnell cracked a few jokes about how much Biden likes to talk, but also talked about the VP’s incredible life story and the tragedy he’s overcome.
“From the grip of unknowable despair,” he said, “came a new man, a better man. Stronger and more compassionate. Grateful for every moment. Appreciative of what really matters.”
McConnell recalled the unlikely friendships Biden made with Republicans (like himself) in his many years in the Senate. And he brought up the Senate’s passage earlier today of the 21st Century Cures Act, including the cancer moonshot that Biden has been directly involved in.
And then he actually invoked the amazing Onion take on Biden over the past few years:
“When The Onion ran a mock photo of him washing a Trans Am in the White House driveway shirtless, America embraced it. And so did he.”
“You’ve been a real friend,” McConnell concluded. “You’ve been a trusted partner. And it’s been an honor to serve with you. We’re all gonna miss you. Godspeed.”
