Trey Gowdy Chastises Republicans Who Were Determined to Make Obama a One-Term President

During an appearance Wednesday on CNN, Congressman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) chided the members of his party who were determined to make sure that Barack Obama‘ presidency never lasted 8 years.

As Gowdy promoted the book he co-authored with Sen. Tim Scott, reiterated that he was not pursuing reelection because he doesn’t believe himself to have been a good fit for Congress.

“I haven’t been good, I don’t think, in Congress, and I don’t like it,” Gowdy said.

When Alisyn Camerota asked him where he thought things went wrong, Gowdy said that winning is all that matters in politics, whereas facts and process were more important in his old criminal justice career.

“I like fairness, I like process, I like facts, and in politics, the objective is as to win. In a criminal justice system, prosecutors clear people just like they convicted people, and the process matters…In politics, it really is just about winning.”

Camerota asked Gowdy if he was leaving politics because of all the toxicity, and he continued to lament the victory-at-any-cost attitude in the government:

“I was thinking last night when President Obama was elected, several Republicans said their objective was to make him a one term president, not do good for the country…and there were lots of people who were laying in bed dreaming of running in 2020 to make President Trump a one term president. So, the notion that folks work together for the betterment of the country I think right now with this moment in American politics, we mainly work towards either keeping the majority or becoming the majority.”
