Elderly Just Stop Oil Protesters Target Magna Carta In British Library
Two elderly Just Stop Oil activists took a hammer and chisel to the protective case of the Magna Carta at the British Library in protest against the UK government’s revised climate strategy.
Reverend Dr. Sue Parfitt, 82, and Judy Bruce, 85, attempted to break the glass enclosure holding the charter that historically established the principle that rulers are not above the law.
This protest comes the same day a High Court ruled that the government’s new climate strategy was unlawful. The elderly pair also glued themselves to the case after holding up signs that read: “The government is breaking the law.”
Bruce said: “There will be no freedom, no lawfulness, no rights, if we allow climate breakdown to become the catastrophe that is now threatened.”
The British Library confirmed the damage on the toughened glass case was minimal and that the Magna Carta remained undamaged. The library’s treasures gallery, however, has been temporarily closed.
The Metropolitan Police have since arrested both protestors on suspicion of criminal damage.
