Rishi Sunak Asks Welsh Voters If They’re Excited For Euros Despite Wales Not Qualifying
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak kicked off his general election campaign with an awkward gaffe during a visit to a brewery in South Wales, asking voters if they were looking forward to “all the football” this summer, only to be reminded that Wales didn’t qualify for the Euros.
Sunak was joined by Welsh Secretary David TC Davies and Vale of Glamorgan MP Alun Cairns during his visit, part of a two day dash across the four nations of the United Kingdom.
In asking about “the football” the prime minister appeared to be curious about whether brewery staff thought the tournament might bring in extra customers. The slip was caught by Sky News producer Tom Larkin.
Despite the slip, Sunak, who does not drink alcohol, praised the brewing industry and emphasised his support for it: “You’re part of a proper industry that we’re keen to support.”
Contesting Wales, Welsh Labour, led by Nick Thomas-Symonds, aims to build on their 2019 performance, where they won 22 seats. Meanwhile Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth also made his pitch, stating his party will be “shouting for Wales.”
As the campaign kicks off, Welsh Labour seeking to expand its dominance, the Conservatives will want to defend their gains from the last election.
