Trump Denies Flip-Flopping on Threat to Close Border: Mexico Has Been ‘Very, Very Good’ Past Four Days
President Donald Trump denies flip-flopping on his threat to close the Southern border — claiming that Mexico has done “very, very good” over the past four days to protect its own Southern border, allowing the President to back off.
In a Friday morning pool spray outside the White House, Trump was pressed on his reversal.
“I never changed my mind at all,” Trump said. “I may shut it down at some point, but I’d rather do tariffs. So Mexico, I have to say, has been very, very good — you know that — over the last four days, since I talked about shutting down the border. If they continue that, everything will be fine. If they don’t we’re going to tariff their cars at 25 percent coming into the United States.”
Trump’s threat to shut down the border reportedly caused widespread concern in his own administration — and even normally Trump-friendly pundits denounced the proposed move.
“I really wanted to close it,” Trump said at a Washington fundraiser Tuesday. “But now Mexico [says] ‘No, no, no,’ first time in decades we will not let anybody get through and they’ve apprehended over a thousand people today at the southern border, their southern border. And they bring them back into their country I said, ‘Why the hell didn’t somebody do that in the first place?’”
